Professor Peter Achunike Akah obtained a doctorate degree (PhD Pharmacology) from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1984. He joined the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as a Faculty member in October 1984 and was promoted to the rank of Professor of Pharmacology in October 1995 at a very young age of 38 years. He was many times the Head of Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, and the former Associate Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies and Dean Student Affairs UNN. He has been a permanent member of the Senate of UNN since 1992, and a member of many faculty and university committees. He was an adjunct professor and Head Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, College of Medicine, Imo State University (2006-2014). One time Visiting Professor at the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), Abuja, (1994-2000). He has served as an adjunct professor of Pharmacology at the University of Uyo, Uyo and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, as well as a Consultant Pharmacologist to UNDP, NIPRD and NAFDAC. He is currently involved in the screening, authentication, verification and analysis of herbal drugs and natural medicines. He has published more than 250 papers and 5 books and 21 book chapters in his subject area, and has presented more than 50 papers in many national and international conferences. He has supervised 19 doctoral thesis and 45 Masters students.
He received the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Leadership Prize in 2007 and the University’s Prize for Most Outstanding Academic in Research and Publication in 2016. He is mentioned in WHO is WHO in Nigeria. He is among the 20 most cited academics in Nigeria and listed among 2 % of the Worlds greatest scientists. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Medicinal Plants Research (JMPR), African Journal of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (AJOPRED), Trends in Natural Products Research (tnpr) and Continental Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (CJPS), Academic Editor, Archives of Current Research International and Series Editor BMC Complimentary and Alternative Medicine. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria (FIPAN) and a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science (FAS). He belongs to many learned scientific and professional associations.
